Is Fatal Claw Worth It? Steam Review Breakdown
This is not our score out of ten — Fatal Claw has been out for two days and a number invented that fast would be worthless. What exists instead: the Steam review split, the points that repeat across launch-week reviews, and one press review.
The Steam numbers
| Steam summary | Very Positive |
|---|---|
| All reviews | 224 (202 positive / 22 negative) |
| Positive share | 90% |
| English-language subset | 68 reviews (62 positive / 6 negative) |
| Checked | 2026-08-28 |
Counts are the all-language Steam totals on 2026-08-28, two days after the 1.0 release. The English subset is listed separately because the split moves fast in a launch week.
What reviewers praise
- Hand-drawn art and animation. The most repeated compliment in launch-week reviews, usually alongside comparisons to Hollow Knight and Ori.
- Atmospheric soundtrack. Called out by long-session reviewers, including a Kickstarter backer with 22 hours logged.
- Dense, rewarding exploration. Reviewers with 17-29 hours describe the map as competent and dense rather than padded.
- Difficulty and accessibility options. Steam lists Adjustable Difficulty and Save Anytime as features, and reviewers confirm both settings menus exist.
What reviewers flag
- You cannot bind controls to mouse buttons. The single most repeated complaint in English launch reviews — at least one negative review exists solely for this.
- Jump and fall physics feel stiff. Several reviewers describe fast fall speed and bounce behaviour that reads as heavy compared to genre benchmarks.
- Uneven sound mixing. Specific effects (cutting bushes is the recurring example) are much louder than the rest of the mix.
- Price compared to genre staples. A minority argument: at $19.99 some reviewers weigh it against cheaper, longer-established Metroidvanias.
The mouse-binding complaint is worth separating from the rest: it is a settings gap, not a design opinion, and it is the one thing multiple otherwise-positive reviewers deduct for. If you play Metroidvanias on keyboard and mouse, check the controls page before buying.
Press coverage
- GameTyrant — Quick Review: Fatal Claw (2026-08-25). Positive quick review; calls the combat and exploration the strong points.
No Metacritic page exists for Fatal Claw as of 2026-08-28, despite "fatal claw metacritic" being a real search (about 160 searches in the last 28 days). Steam's own review score is the only aggregate that exists right now.
So, worth it?
The pattern in the reviews is consistent enough to summarise honestly: people who want a dense, hand-drawn Metroidvania with real exploration are getting exactly that, and the reservations cluster on feel and settings — jump physics, sound mixing, keyboard remapping — rather than on content. Playtimes of 17 to 29 hours in launch week from people still not finished suggest the $19.99 is buying a full-length game. Check the price and platform facts and the specs before you decide.
